General Appearance: Large, powerful, alert, heavy boned. Muscular, brisk, sharp movements. Dignified and courageous. Double coated, sheds twice a year. Should be brushed out twice a week.

Size, Proportion, and Substance: Height-males, 26 to 28 inches at the withers; females 24 to 26 inches. Weight between 75-110 pounds.

Background: Akitas are strong and loyal, making them a great guard dog. Akitas will guard their families with their lives. Females tend to do better with children, as males have a very dominant nature. Neither sex does well with other dominant dog breeds. Socialization is crucial for a well trained Akita. Frequent brushing will help control shedding year round.
