General Appearance: A hardy, medium sized dog, square in profile with a dense gray coat, courageous and strong.

Size, Proportion, and Substance: Height-males, 20 1/2 inches at the withers; females, 19 1/2 inches. Weight-males, about 55 lbs.; females, about 48 lbs.

Background: Bred to hunt elk, moose and bear, the Elkhound is a confident character. With the courage of his larger cousins, this mid-sized dog makes a great watchdog and family companion. He loves to play. Elkhounds are very intelligent and learn quickly; praise him and he will respond. Due to his high-energy level and playful demeanor, Elkhounds are not recommended for the elderly or inactive.
